Better or Worse? – IDADA Pavilion, 2012 Super Bowl

In 2012, I had the chance to collaborate with C. Thomas Lewis on his video installation Better or Worse?, which was shown at the IDADA Pavilion during the Super Bowl events in Indianapolis. I came on as a Creative Technologist to help develop and execute the projection elements of the piece.

The installation explored themes of visual perception and subjectivity, drawing from sources like the Stroop Effect, vision exams, and Duchamp’s Anemic Cinema. One of the main questions posed by the piece — “Better or worse?” — plays on the optometrist’s phrase, but also becomes a broader commentary on how we evaluate what we see.

Technically, we built:

  • A field of suspended circular surfaces, raised like abstract flowers, each projection-mapped with a gradient time-lapse of a ceiling fan — simple footage recontextualized to feel organic and alive.
  • Two opposing corners, one with stylized eyeball cutouts and another with eye-chart-like concentric circles, both mapped with animations to emphasize contrast and symmetry.

We used Millumin for playback and projection control, and After Effects for motion design. My role included building the mapped environments, setting up projector alignment, and helping translate conceptual goals into interactive and spatial design.
