From Now On
In 2013, I collaborated with C. Thomas Lewis on From Now On, a projection-mapped gallery installation that explored themes of climate change, perception, and time. It was part of a larger body of work Thomas developed over the course of a year, and I was brought on as a Creative Technologist to contribute to the technical execution of some key pieces.
One of my main responsibilities was designing the projection system for a large, mobile box structure that was normally used to hang paintings. We repurposed it as an active projection surface — about 4′ x 8′ x 2.5′, mounted on casters — and created two opposing visuals mapped to its front and back.
- On one side, we animated floating molecular particles — bouncing spheres that represented elements in the atmosphere, simulating pollution and heat flow.
- On the other side, we projected a rising rainwater simulation, timed to fill the box from the bottom up.
By carefully aligning the projections and controlling sightlines, we were able to create an effect where viewers could only see one illusion at a time, depending on where they stood.
Technically, I handled:
- Projection setup and calibration
- Animation design and timing
- Integration of the visuals with the gallery layout and lighting
The piece complemented other elements in the exhibit, including a suspended, projection-mapped maple tree and a sculptural timeline of environmental change. The overall goal was to provoke reflection on environmental responsibility — not with direct messaging, but by using space, sound, and light to create tension and contrast.
